The new Windows 11 update is version 26H2, also called the Windows 11 2026 Update, and Microsoft started rolling it out on 29 September 2026. For devices on version 24H2 or 25H2 it arrives as a small update that needs a single restart. It switches on the new Start menu, more taskbar options, and improvements to File Explorer and search. To install it, open Settings and then Windows Update. If it does not show up, the reason is usually the gradual rollout, a missing September update, or a temporary hold Microsoft has placed on your device because of a known compatibility issue.
What is the Windows 11 version 26H2 update?
According to Microsoft's official announcement, version 26H2 is this year's annual Windows 11 update. What is new is how it arrives: versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share the same system files, so the new features are already on your PC through monthly updates, just switched off. The 26H2 update is a small "master switch" called an enablement package that turns them on, followed by a single restart. That makes installation much faster than a full operating system upgrade.
There is a benefit many people miss: installing 26H2 starts a new support period for your PC, 24 months for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education.
Top features of the Windows 11 26H2 update
These are the main features from Microsoft's official list; some of them reached your PC before the update through monthly updates:
- A new Start menu. It has a scrollable All section, category and grid views for apps, and you can pick the menu size and show or hide the Pinned, Recent and All sections.
- A more flexible taskbar. You can place it at the bottom, top, left or right of the screen, and shrink it to reduce icon size and taskbar height.
- A faster File Explorer. Its Home page opens faster, it supports more archive formats, you can rename files with voice typing, and it keeps view and sort settings in folders such as Downloads and Documents.
- Clearer search. You can preview a result without opening it, app search handles typos and partial names, and each result shows whether it is an app, a setting or a file.
- Fewer restarts. Windows Update now installs eligible updates together with the monthly security update when possible, so you restart less often.
- Easier recovery. Point-in-time restore can roll the PC back, including apps, settings and files, to a recent automatic restore point.
- Better Bluetooth and audio. Improvements to Bluetooth reliability, voice calls and reconnecting after hibernation.
How to install the Windows 11 26H2 update
- Check your current version. Press the Windows key with R, type winver and press Enter. You need version 24H2 or 25H2.
- Install the latest monthly updates first. On the KB5121794 update page, Microsoft requires the 22 September 2026 update (KB5124010) or later.
- Turn on early updates. Open Settings, then Windows Update, and turn on "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available", as Microsoft explains.
- Download the update. If you see "Windows 11, version 26H2 is available", choose Download & install.
- Restart. One restart is enough in most cases.
What to do if the 26H2 update does not show up
| Cause | How to tell | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Gradual rollout | Your PC is eligible but the update does not appear | Turn on early updates and wait; Microsoft says the rollout will expand over the coming months |
| Version older than 24H2 | winver shows an older version | Install available updates first until you reach 24H2 or 25H2 |
| Missing the September update | Your latest update is older than 22 September 2026 | Install KB5124010 or any later cumulative update |
| Temporary hold on your PC | A known compatibility issue with hardware or software on your PC | Check the release health page and do not force the update until Microsoft lifts the hold |
| Work PC managed by your company | The PC is tied to a work account or company network | Updates arrive under your IT department's policy, so ask them |
Microsoft calls the temporary hold a "safeguard hold" and explains on a dedicated page how to check whether your PC is affected. If you have tried everything above and the problem remains, open the Get Help app in Windows, as the release health page recommends.
Known issues in 26H2 so far
According to the release health page as of 9 October 2026: some older apps that need AC-3 audio decoding may close unexpectedly after the 22 September updates and later, a confirmed issue not yet fixed. Some USB audio devices may fail, and some virtual desktop environments may show a black screen after sign-in; Microsoft has mitigated both. The issue where domain-joined devices could lose their secure trust relationship with the domain has been resolved.
What about company PCs?
Microsoft recommends that businesses start by installing 26H2 on a small group of PCs to test apps and critical workflows, then expand to the rest. In 26H2, some features become enabled by default on company devices, such as Windows settings backup, app actions from the taskbar and File Explorer improvements. If your company still has PCs on Windows 10, read the Windows 10 end-of-support date for business PCs.
What comes after 26H2?
Microsoft is now testing a new taskbar search with Windows Insider members that carries out commands directly: type "switch to dark mode", "turn on Bluetooth" or "arrange windows on screen" and it does it without opening Settings. For now it is in an experimental channel and in English only, and Microsoft plans to bring it to the Start menu next year.
The bottom line
The Windows 11 26H2 update is light and quick to install. It switches on the new Start menu, taskbar options, and search and File Explorer improvements, and extends your PC's support by at least two years. Install the September update first, turn on early updates, and if it still does not show up, check the release health page before trying to force it.
