On October 26, 2026, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior launched Absher Travel for Visitors in the Absher app, for citizens of the 6 GCC states and other visitors arriving through all of the Kingdom's land border crossings, according to the Saudi Press Agency. It is optional today and becomes mandatory 6 months after launch, which puts it around late April 2027. If your clients, guests or partners drive to you from Bahrain, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar or Oman, the practical step is simple: add Absher Travel for Visitors to your booking confirmation or invitation before your guest discovers it at the border. We covered the operating principle behind Absher Travel in our August 26 article; this one is about the new deadline and what your business does before it.
What exactly was announced today?
According to the official announcement, the service lets travelers complete travel procedures and requirements digitally before reaching the border crossing, including registering traveler and vehicle information and obtaining vehicle insurance. It was launched with 8 partners: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Tourism, the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA), the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA), the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), the Insurance Authority, the General Directorate of Passports, and Public Security.
The ministry described 4 steps:
- Open Absher Travel for Visitors in the Absher app before the trip.
- Select the nationality and enter the mobile number and document type.
- Specify the border crossing and the expected travel date.
- Complete the traveler, vehicle and insurance information.
Who does this matter to in business?
The service is aimed at the visitor, but their experience at the border becomes their first impression of you. It directly concerns any business that receives guests who drive across a land border:
- Hotels, serviced apartments and resorts, especially in the Eastern Province and border regions.
- Event, exhibition and conference organizers who invite participants from the Gulf.
- Companies that host GCC clients or partners for meetings and handovers.
- Clinics and service centers that see visitors from neighboring countries by appointment.
The official announcement talks about visitors and their vehicles; it does not detail commercial freight or truck drivers. If your business moves goods across the border, do not build on this news and check with the competent authority directly.
The service is not new for citizens and residents
On March 13, 2024, the General Directorate of Passports launched an upgraded Absher Travel at the King Fahd Causeway, letting travelers pay the causeway fee and insure their vehicle before arrival, with automatic vehicle checks through the Absher app and location verification through the Nafath app. It was optional for citizens and residents at the time. What is new today is that the same idea now reaches visitors at every land crossing, with a firm date for it to become mandatory. Your Saudi and resident staff may already know it; your GCC guest may be hearing about it for the first time.
3 steps for your business before April 2027
- The confirmation message: add one line to your booking or invitation message naming Absher Travel for Visitors and saying that traveler, vehicle and insurance details are completed in the app before arrival. Send it days ahead, not on the day.
- A field in your system: if you use a booking system or CRM, add an arrival-mode field (air or road) so you know who needs the reminder instead of sending it to everyone.
- Your front desk: brief reception and customer service on the service and its exact name, so they can answer a guest who calls from the road without guessing.
Do not wait for the mandatory date. The 6 optional months are when your guests learn the step without pressure, and a business that reminds them early looks organized.
The Origami view
We read this as part of a clear trend: government procedures move to before arrival, and the app, not the counter, becomes the starting point. A business that designs its customer journey on the same logic, collecting data and reminding guests of requirements before the appointment, wins twice: the guest arrives faster, and the receptionist does not spend time explaining what could have been sent in advance.
In the systems we build, this kind of reminder is not a big project: a booking field, a message template and a send rule before the appointment. If you want it wired into your booking or customer system, see our services or contact us.
The bottom line
Absher Travel for Visitors is available from today and becomes mandatory in 6 months. If your guests drive in from the Gulf, add the step to your confirmation message this week, flag road arrivals in your system, and give your front desk one clear answer. For commercial freight, go to the competent authority.
