Is the Era of Free Gemini Over? Google Restricts Its Strongest Models From 9 October

No, free Gemini has not ended, but it has become weaker. According to Google's official help page, from 9 October 2026 a free account in the Gemini app is limited to the lightest model, Flash-Lite, and loses the Flash and Pro models it had (3.6 Flash and varying access to 3.1 Pro). Google AI Plus subscribers keep Flash but lose Pro, while AI Pro and AI Ultra keep all three models, and AI Pro gains Deep Think. The change applies only to personal accounts and does not touch company-owned Google Workspace accounts.

What exactly changes on 9 October?

Google published the change on a help page titled "Changes to Gemini model access and limits": "Starting in October 2026, there will be changes to model availability for Gemini Apps when you use a personal account." It takes effect on 9 October for users without a subscription; AI Plus subscribers receive an email with their own date.

The update also adds a new option on every plan: choosing the model's effort level (low, medium or high). Higher effort gives more thorough answers but uses up your limit faster.

A common correction: do free users lose Gemini 3.8 Flash?

No. That wording spread widely, but Google's official page gives no version numbers at all, only tier names: Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. Google's subscriptions page describes today's free plan as access to 3.6 Flash and varying access to 3.1 Pro. When Google launched 3.8 Flash on 2 September 2026, it said that in the Gemini app it was for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers only, so it was never free in the first place. According to 9to5Google, free users keep 3.5 Flash-Lite.

What do the plans cost in Saudi Arabia?

Monthly prices as shown on Google's Saudi Gemini subscriptions page on 5 October 2026:

PlanMonthly priceModels after 9 OctUsage limitContext windowStorage
Free0 SARFlash-LiteStandard32K tokens15 GB
Google AI Plus18.99 SARFlash-Lite, Flash2x free128K tokens400 GB
Google AI Pro85.99 SARAll three + Deep Think4x free1M tokens5 TB
Google AI Ultra349.99 or 859.99 SARAll three + Deep Think5x or 20x AI Pro1M tokensFrom 20 TB

For comparison, US prices are 4.99, 19.99, and 99.99 or 199.99 dollars. The Saudi page does not state whether prices include VAT. After the change, AI Pro at 85.99 SAR becomes the cheapest plan with access to the Pro model.

Gemini limits have been compute-based since 17 May 2026: they refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap, and heavy features such as image and video generation, Deep Research and the Pro model use them up faster.

Is Google turning Gemini into a paid service?

Partly, and quietly. Google gives no reason on its page, and no spokesperson had commented as of 5 October. But its official limits page says plainly: "If capacity changes, limits for users without a Google AI plan may be limited before users with a plan." Three signals arrived at the same time:

  • Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on 30 September 2026, three days before the limits news, rolling out first to paying API customers and AI Ultra subscribers.
  • On 18 September Google restricted its 2.5 models in the API to developers who had used them before, saying it did so to maintain sufficient capacity.
  • Competitors are turning free tiers into revenue channels: OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT for Free and Go users in the US on 9 February 2026 and later expanded to other countries, while keeping unlimited everyday text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna.

So the picture is this: free stays, but it shifts from a trial of the full service to an entry point on the lightest model, with the strong models moving behind a subscription. That is our reading of the market direction, not a statement from Google.

What this means for your business

1. Staff on free personal accounts? The problem is bigger than the model

If your team uses Gemini through personal Gmail accounts at work, on 9 October they will notice weaker answers and a context window of only 32K tokens. The bigger risk is data: Google's official Gemini Apps privacy page says human reviewers may read some chats, and that reviewed chats are kept for up to three years and are not deleted even if the user deletes their activity. Google explicitly asks users not to enter confidential information.

2. Google Workspace is not affected, and its data is protected

The change is limited to personal accounts. Workspace has its own rules: Business Starter gives basic access to Pro and a 32K-token window, while Business Standard and above give up to 25 Pro prompts every four hours and a one-million-token window. More importantly, Google commits that chats and files of Workspace business customers are not reviewed by humans or used to train models outside the organisation without permission.

3. Building a product on the Gemini API? Free there has a different cost

The API free tier still exists according to the pricing page updated on 1 October, and gemini-3.8-flash is free on it. But Google's terms state that content sent through the free tier is used to improve its products and may be read by humans, and advise against sending sensitive or personal data. On the paid tier, 3.8 Flash currently costs 0.75 dollars per million input tokens and 3.75 for output until 31 December 2026, then doubles to 1.50 and 7.50 dollars from 1 January 2027. Put that in next year's budget now.

4. The student offer still stands, but it is weaker

In September Google brought back a free year of AI Plus for university students in Arab countries where the plan is available, with registration before 31 December. The offer advertised Gemini with 3.1 Pro, but AI Plus loses Pro after this change.

Which plan suits whom?

Conclusion

The era of free Gemini is not over, but the era of powerful free Gemini is. From 9 October free users get the lightest model, and AI Pro at 85.99 SAR a month becomes the cheapest door to the Pro model. For any business, the right decision is not buying individual subscriptions for staff, but moving work off personal accounts into Workspace or a paid API, where company data stays out of training and human review.

Frequently asked questions

Has free Gemini ended?+

No. The free account remains, but from 9 October 2026 it is limited to the lighter Flash-Lite model and loses Flash and Pro. The change applies only to personal accounts and does not affect Google Workspace accounts.

Which models do free users lose?+

They lose the Flash model (currently 3.6 Flash) and varying access to the Pro model (currently 3.1 Pro), and keep Flash-Lite. They do not lose Gemini 3.8 Flash, because in the app it was only ever available to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

What happens to Google AI Plus subscribers?+

They keep Flash-Lite and Flash and lose Pro. The 9 October date does not necessarily apply to them; they receive an email with the change date for their account.

What do Google AI plans cost in Saudi Arabia?+

According to the Saudi subscriptions page on 5 October 2026: AI Plus 18.99 SAR a month, AI Pro 85.99 SAR, and AI Ultra 349.99 or 859.99 SAR. AI Pro is the cheapest plan with the Pro model after the change.

Are Google Workspace or the API affected?+

Google's page limits the change to personal accounts, so Workspace business accounts follow separate rules that have not changed. The API free tier still exists, but its data is used to improve Google's products, unlike the paid tier.

What is Deep Think, and is it more available now?+

Deep Think is an advanced reasoning mode that tests several hypotheses in parallel and can take minutes to answer. It was AI Ultra only; with this change it also becomes available to AI Pro subscribers.
