The main difference now is the model that answers you. Since 7 October 2026 ChatGPT has run on GPT-6, but the free version and the Go plan use GPT-6 Luna, while Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise use the stronger GPT-6 Sol. The good news is that the update's headline feature, Intelligent UI, which turns answers into visuals, buttons and interactive tools, is available to everyone, free users included. Paid plans add deeper thinking levels, higher limits for files, images and research, and extra work tools.

What is new in the ChatGPT update?

According to OpenAI's official announcement, GPT-6 reached ChatGPT in two stages: on 7 October for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers, and on 8 October for the free version and the Go plan. The company says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week, which makes this one of its widest rollouts yet. The rollout is gradual worldwide, so if you have not noticed the change in your account yet, it may reach you within days. The update changes three things any user will notice:

  • Intelligent UI. Instead of text alone, an answer may come as a comparison table, a chart, buttons you tap or a form you fill in, depending on your question.
  • Tools built on request. Ask for a calculator to see how your savings could grow, a bill splitter for dinner with friends, or a game to play in the conversation, and ChatGPT builds it on the spot.
  • Answers that start before the thinking ends. ChatGPT now starts writing while it is still thinking, then adds detail as it goes. For questions that need a web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than the previous version.

Is ChatGPT really faster and more accurate?

According to OpenAI's internal tests, yes on two fronts. The first is speed: GPT-6 at its highest thinking level now starts answering as early as the previous version did at medium thinking, while scoring better than the previous version's highest level. The second is search: the model makes better decisions about when to look things up online and more reliably finds information that supports its answer. The company also says GPT-6 is clearer about its limits when it lacks information or a tool, and refuses fewer ordinary, harmless requests. Remember that these results were measured by the company itself, so check any important fact before relying on it.

What is the difference between free and paid after GPT-6?

The table below comes from OpenAI's official pages: the help page on Intelligent UI and the plans page. We left prices out because they vary by country; check the price on the plan page in your account.

How can you use Intelligent UI in your day?

No setup is needed. Ask your question as usual, and ChatGPT decides whether text, a table or a tool fits best. These examples come from OpenAI itself, and you can try them today:

  1. A day or trip plan. Ask for a road-trip plan, and the stops may appear on a map with notes on which detours are worth it.
  2. A recipe with timings. Ask for a lunch recipe, and the timing plan may sit next to the cooking steps.
  3. A personal calculator. Type: "Build me a calculator showing how my savings grow if I put aside a fixed amount every month," then change the numbers and watch the result.
  4. Understanding a hard topic. Ask for an interactive explanation of a science topic, change a value and see what happens step by step.

If you prefer plain text, you can simplify the layout in ChatGPT's settings on the web: Personalization, then Layout and Visuals, then Simple. OpenAI says this reduces visual and interactive elements, though some may still appear. You can also add something like "keep answers concise" or "use tables when comparing options" to your Custom Instructions.

What are the limits of Intelligent UI?

  • It works in the Chat tab only, not in the Work tab and not in Voice.
  • It works from Instant up to Extra High thinking, but not with the Pro reasoning option on the Pro plan.
  • Some elements, such as checklists, keep their state when you refresh the same chat, but state does not carry over to other chats.
  • The models behind Work and Codex did not change in this update; the change covers regular chat.

Is a paid plan worth it now?

If you use ChatGPT for everyday questions, writing messages and summarizing short texts, the free version is now stronger than before, and Intelligent UI is fully yours. If you analyze many files, write long reports, need deeper thinking on hard problems, or use projects and scheduled tasks for work, the gap between Luna and Sol plus the usage limits make Plus a practical choice. For business owners: if your team handles customer data, Business and Enterprise plans let an admin control which models staff can use.

The bottom line

The new ChatGPT update brings GPT-6 to everyone, but on two models: Luna for Free and Go, Sol for paid plans. Intelligent UI, which builds tables and tools inside the chat, is open to all. Try the free version first on your real questions, and move to Plus only when you hit file limits or need deeper thinking.
